Theone (Granny) NEEL

Theone (Granny) Neel, 91, of the Clearfork community in Tazewell County, died Monday, January 30, 2012, at Heritage Hall Health Care in Blacksburg. Born March 21, 1920, at Shawver's Mill, she was a daughter of the late Auther L. and Sallie Mae Kinser Leffel. She was a member of the Mt Olivet United Methodist Church at Gratton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Ruthola Neel and her husband, Wayne and one brother, Malcolm "Pete" Leffel. Theone was her given name, but most people knew her as "Granny". For those not fortunate enough to meet her, hopefully they knew her through her cookbooks. Granny enjoyed a life of cooking and sharing recipes. She learned how to cook from her mother, and continued cooking for many years. She operated a family style restaurant, "Granny's Kitchen", and later spent many years catering local events and special occasions in the Tazewell area. She is best known for her collection of recipes compiled into two cookbooks, 'Granny's Kitchen" and "Holiday Treats". What started as a hobby turned
into to quite an enterprise, with her having sold close to 50,000 books. Her books have been featured in "Virginia's Best of the Best" cookbook, and are known around the country. Her cookbooks are valued in every kitchen they occupy, and most probably have worn pages that show signs of cooking wear, a splatter here or there, a drop of this or that, because of the frequent use. She had a recipe for everything it seems, and always a helpful hint. She enjoyed cooking and always had a smile and something tasty to share, and she will be greatly missed by family and friends. Her memory will continue on every time someone pulls out one of the trusted books and creates a tasty dish for family and friends. She was a great mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her life was devoted to God, her church and her family. Shebrought love and laughter into our lives and her memory will always be with us.

She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Scott "Kenny" Neel and wife, Madge, of Newport, and Ronnie J. Neel and wife, Sandra, of Tazewell; nine grandchildren, Holly Neel Carroll and husband, Glenn, Lisa Neel Porterfield and husband, Mike, Theron Scott Neel and wife, Donna, Caryn Neel Bushong and husband, Miller, Jenny Neel Turner and husband, Ben, Rodney Neel and wife, Joan, Rhonda Amick and husband, Myron, Reece Neel and wife, Audrey, Regina Doss and husband, Daniel; one stepgranddaughter, Crystal Clevinger and husband, Chris; nine great-grandsons; two great-granddaughters; one stepgreat-grandson; sister in law, Margaret Pruitt Leffel of Bluefield; and several nieces and nephews.
