Lake Co. Communities and Settlements

Tavares

Tavares, named for Lopez Paray Tavares, who was the Portuguese ancestor of the city's founder, Major Alexander St. Clair-Abrams, is the county seat of Lake county. Tavares was founded in 1880 and was incorporated in 1885. The population is around 8,000.

The picturesque Dora Canal flows through Tavares connecting
Lakes Eustis and Dora. The canal is a tree shaded mile of
fairly deep water dotted with cypress knees and wildlife.
Alligators and turtles sun while the fish play in
the peaceful waters.

Tavares is the host of the annual 4th of July
Parade and Fireworks.

The courthouse has expanded over
the years to three. The
original one boasts a unique flag
pole base of rocks from many different countries and states.
